What is the 4K Fun Run for Hope against Cervical Cancer?
This is a 4K run being held to spread awareness and promote self testing for cervical cancer in underserved areas of the US as well as across the globe.
Why run for cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer is the second most common cause of female cancer mortality in the world. Countries like Africa, South East Asia, and South America have significantly higher cervical cancer rates. Particularly, in the United States, incidences of cervical cancer arise largely because of poverty, lack of health insurance, lack of access to preventive services, and the invasive nature of cancer screenings. Often, women hesitate to get screened for cervical cancer due to these reasons. The impact of these reasons is felt locally in the DMV area as well. For example, certain counties of Maryland like Dorchester and Somerset County have a 25% higher incidence of cervical cancer than the rest of the country. However, these rates can be reduced through screening and the HPV vaccine.
What is the role of Service Beyond Borders for this cause?
Service Beyond Borders aims at targeting these underserved areas in the US and the World, to reduce the risk and prevent cervical cancer. We are giving away self-testing kits like the one shown above to encourage and enable women in under-served areas to screen themselves. The retail cost of each kit is $89. Proceeds from the run will be used to purchase and give away more such kits, so that many more young girls and women can benefit from them.
